Walk Worthy Of The Calling

Family Devotional · Three Days
Day One

Walk Worthy

Ephesians 4:1-3 — “I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”
Paul doesn't tell the church at Ephesus to prove their calling with power. He tells them to prove it with lowliness. Bishop Beau preached that walking worthy starts small — humility, gentleness, patience with the people who are hardest to be patient with. That comes before any gift, any sign, any answered prayer. God isn't asking your family to be impressive this week. He's asking you to be lowly, gentle, and diligent to guard the peace between you and the people you love most.
Fill in the blank: “I… beseech you to walk worthy of the ______ with which you were called.” (calling)
Family Discussion
  1. What would "lowliness" look like in our home this week, practically?
  2. Where has needing to be right gotten in the way of being gentle with someone in this family?
  3. Personal: a) Is there someone you need to bear with in love today, even though it's hard? b) And what does "bearing in love" mean to you?
Day Two

Right Isn't The Same As Gentle

Ephesians 4:2 — “with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love,”
Bishop Beau told the church something hard about himself: he spent years being correct without being gentle, and it hurt the very people he was trying to lead — including his own sons. He said it plainly: "I began to realize I was the one who was guilty of that. And man, that pierces my heart, because I love Jesus and I want people to go to heaven." Being right can still push people away from God if it isn't carried in lowliness. This week, ask God to show you where you've confused correction with gentleness.
Fill in the blank: “…with all lowliness and ______, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love.” (gentleness)
Family Discussion
  1. Can someone be right and still cause harm? How?
  2. Who in your life has shown you truth with real gentleness? What did that look like?
  3. Personal: Is there someone you've hurt while trying to help them? What would it look like to go back to them?
Day Three

Carried By Someone Else's Faith

Luke 5:20 — “When He saw their faith, He said to him, ‘Man, your sins are forgiven you.’”
Four friends carried a paralyzed man to Jesus, and when they couldn't get through the crowd, they tore open a roof and lowered him down. Jesus didn't respond to the paralyzed man's own faith — the text says He saw their faith. Bishop Beau said it plainly: "Let's just say for this moment that man on the cot didn't have the faith… but his friends did." Some weeks, you won't have the faith to carry yourself. That's what the church is for. Somebody else's faith can carry you to Jesus, and your faith can carry somebody else.
Fill in the blank: “When He saw their ______, He said to him, ‘Man, your sins are forgiven you.’” (faith)
Family Discussion
  1. Who has carried you to Jesus when you couldn't get there yourself?
  2. Is there someone right now who needs you to have faith on their behalf?
  3. Personal: What would it look like this week for you to bring someone specific to Jesus, the way these four friends did?
