Reigning in Life
June 8, 2026  |  Courts of Praise  |  Bishop Beau Barton
Romans 5:17. Most believers walk right past it. Jesus didn't just come to save you from sin. He came so you would reign in life.
Jesus did not come merely to save us from sin — though that is gloriously true. He came so that we would reign in life. Adam and Jesus both started sinless. Both faced the same crossroad of obedience. Adam chose his own will and brought death. Jesus chose the Father's will and brought righteousness. When you were born again, God placed you at that same starting line — holy, pure, a new creation. The decision in front of you every day is the same one they faced. The problem is not that God hasn't provided. The problem is that most believers have never been told what they actually are, or what they actually carry. We default to old patterns not because we lack the Spirit, but because our minds haven't caught up to what Christ accomplished on the cross. Stop living beneath what God has made you — yield, conform to who you are in Christ, and walk in the abundance of grace that was given the moment you were born again.
ReferenceText (NKJV)
Romans 5:17 For if by one man's offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.
Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned.
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 4:9 In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.
1
Jesus came to do more than save you — he came so you would reign
Romans 5:17 says those who receive the abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness will reign in life through Jesus Christ. Reign means dominate. This life is subjected to you and to the Spirit of God living in you. That is the normal position of a born-again believer.
2
Sin entered through one man's decision — not through God
God created everything good. Every step of creation, he stepped back — that's good. He did not create sin. One man — Adam — made a decision that introduced sin into a world that had never known it. One man's choice broke it. One man's obedience — Jesus — is what brought righteousness back.
3
Adam and Jesus both started in the same place — and so do you
Adam was formed sinless. Jesus was born sinless. When you were born again, you stood before God in the exact same condition — pure, holy, a new creation. The problem is not your standing. The problem is that the mind hasn't renewed to match what God actually did. "Old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new." — 2 Corinthians 5:17
4
You are not sinning accidentally — you are overriding the Spirit
"You're not sinning against God accidentally. You're overriding the Spirit of God that brings conviction of sin and is telling you, don't do that." Override it enough times and you go numb to it — you give yourself full permission and call it your personality. The answer is not to try harder. Yield to what the Spirit is already doing, confess when you fail, and get back up.
5
The blood of Jesus restores you immediately when you confess
"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." — 1 John 1:9. Confess in sincerity and you immediately return to that place of being perfect, holy, without stain before God. You don't work your way back. You confess. You receive. You get up and keep walking. That is the daily posture of a son or daughter who knows who they are.
6
The abundance of grace has already been given — yield to it
"God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him." — 1 John 4:9. Not just saved through him. Live through him. The abundance of grace is not something still waiting to be received. It was given the moment you were born again. You already have it. What you do with it is on you now.
Jesus didn't just come to save you. He came also so that you would reign in life.
You were just as sinless as Jesus was when you were born again. You were at a perfect place.
You're not sinning against God accidentally. You're overriding the Spirit of God that brings conviction of sin and is telling you, don't do that.
I've got to conform to who I am. And who are you? You're a son of God. You're a daughter of God that started in the same place that Jesus, the holy one, did.
